On 13th November Bristol Indymedia and Trapese collective filmed an interview with Crisitian Dominguez on his views of the COP15 summit and what his country Bolivia was hoping to achieve at the conference.

As well talking about this he also discussed his support for the people going to Copenhagen to support their demands coming from the global south. Find out what he had to say on the Bliptv Bristol Indymedia channel link.

Madboy23 writes Cristian Domínguez is the Bolivian Secretary of Environment and Resources and United Confederation of Bolivian Campesino Workers and member of the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change, participating in the UN cliate talks, presents his country's position on the negotiations. As part of the 100 Days and C-Words exhibition at Arnolfini,[1, 2] Domínguez joined local activists planning to go to Copenhagen to call for an urgent people's mobilisation to Copenhagen and an end to green capitalist solutions for the benefit of all life on earth.

Cristian Domínguez has previously said, “It's not the decision of one country, but all of the countries of the world. It's not about the interests of states or political parties, but the interests of the citizens of the world.” [3]

Evo Morales, Bolivian president, will be a major player at Copenhagen. He has demanded a court for climate justice and indigenous rights. Latin American and Caribbean countries have joined forces to call for climate justice and the defence of the rights of the Earth ahead of climate change talks in Copenhagen. ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas) has called on developed countries to recognise the “climate debt” caused by their historical carbon emissions. The network, consisting of nine counties representing 73 million people, also demanded that rich nations “adopt significant commitments to reduce greenhouse gas discharge and approve mechanisms to help countries to preserve, protect and conserve their forests”.

OK given to nuclear power

As the government gives the go-ahead for a new generation of nuclear power, Jim Duffy of Stop Hinkley writes; "There are a host of reasons to challenge the nuclear policy statement from our simply not needing nuclear power to the undemocratic and superficial planning system that is being foisted on us. And we call for a public inquiry into the Justification issue through which nuclear new build and its health effects should be thoroughly scrutinised. A truly independent examination of the local effects of radiation should be enough to scupper the nuclear project. Ed Milliband cannot claim to have that independence. ... There are several conditions upon which new nuclear pivots. Resolving the thorny nuclear waste problem is one and looks nowhere near resolution. The concerned public should be confident there are several fronts where new nuclear power is weak and can be challenged." Full article.

Nick has written extensively on the notion of living off grid, that is how to disconnect yourself from energy and utility companies in order to make yourself self-sufficient and sustainable.

featured image
. Why would you want to do that you may ask? Well as climate change and energy resources such as oil continue to decline, the cost and availability of cheap energy will also decline. Currently our energy needs are being fulfilled by others, such as gas from Russia and Oil from all over the world putting the UK in a very precarious position in terms of energy. This means that new energy solutions will have to be found for the population of the UK. So how do people live off-grid, well there is no one way of doing this. Nick outlines a variety of ways that people are living off-grid in his book, from those who are living in forests and using a minimal amount of energy, to people who have developed complex technological systems to provide themselves with large amounts of energy, to those living in canal boats and storage containers. All of these people are finding ways to live off grid using a variety of methods such as solar power, water power, growing their own food in a drive to become self sufficient. Off grid communities are springing up everywhere and Nick has recently been travelling around the US talking to them. Nick also runs a website http://www.off-grid.net which has huge amounts of information on all aspects of living off grid.

The option of living off grid has never been so important - with unemployment about to rise above 3 million (and real unemployment above 4.6 million), with the collpase of banks and companies and houses still out of reach of first time buyers, living off-grid maybe the only solution to survive in these austere times.

Living off-grid is destined to become more and more part of public debate as time moves on and energy resources change, recently it has featured on the front cover of Wired magazine.

So come along to the Cube Cinema and find out more about How to live off grid on the 2nd November at 7.45pm / £4 or £3 (but nobody refused for lack of funds).

Free concert in Millennium Square to build support for negotiators at COP15

featured image

@ Millennium Square 3-9pm Saturday 24th October

Tim Barker Writes: On the 24th October some of Bristol’s top musicians, including Babyhead, Kid Carpet and Bizali, will join Jonathan Porritt to call on global leaders meeting at December’s UN climate change talks in Copenhagen to take strong action to keep global warming below 2° and protect the world’s poorest.

The action-packed day features bands, dancing, films, painters and speakers – from internationally celebrated experts to local heroes - highlighting the increasing threat of climate change. The action day will bring together Bristolians to send a message to the world’s leaders that a global agreement to reduce CO2 emissions is urgently needed. All musicians have given their services for free – and the whole day of action at Climate Countdown is completely free to the public.

To join in with the international 350.org day of action, everyone who comes along is being encouraged to dress completely in blue clothing, symbolising the ‘human wave’ of pressure on leaders before the Copenhagen talks. Jonathan Porritt will speak at 3pm and then at 3.50pm the Climate Countdown organisers will get together 350 people to join hands in Millennium Square and make a giant ‘350’ aerial picture, while marking a minutes silence.

The 350 figure symbolises the maximum number of parts per million of CO2 we can allow in the atmosphere to avoid runaway climate change. All around the globe on October 24th millions of people will join this day of creative action and protest to raise awareness on climate change.
