A new community group is coming to Truro. Free Cakes for Kids UK is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are baked by volunteers in the local community with the child's favourite theme or style. The service is free, friendly and confidential.

A group of enthusiastic bakers are starting the community project in Truro. A recruitment and information event is being held to attract potential volunteers to the project. They are not only looking for volunteers willing to bake the birthday cakes, but also those who would like to get involved in other ways such as delivery drivers, marketing & PR, community liaisons or even those that would like to donate to the project such supermarkets, flour mills or local farmers.

The project has been running in Oxford since 2008 and has baked over 200 cakes involving over 25 volunteers from the local community.

Presents will come and go on birthdays but it's the cake you really remember. At Free Cakes For Kids we're not just making cakes; we're making memories!” said Stephanie Griggs-Trevarthen, Network Coordinator for FCFK UK, who joined the project three years ago in Oxford and is now helping the group establish in Truro.

The recruitment and information evening is being held at Mums & Little Ones in Tinners Court, Truro on Friday 7 October 2011 at 12:00. For more information on FCFK Truro or starting a group in your local community contact

Notes for Editors:

  1. The first Free Cakes for Kids group in the UK was founded in December 2008. Having read about Toni Poulos and the Free Cakes For Kids project in the USA, Henriette Lundgren adapted the model to her local community and set up the first FCFK UK group in Oxford. Since then the group has grown steadily, extended its activities to community baking sessions and helped others set up groups in their communities.

  2. The next group to get started, in March 2010, was in Cardiff, where Sarah Williams started a group and is currently looking to expand to the rest of Wales. Website:

  3. More groups have since emerged including Bicester, Merton (London), Birmingham, North Leeds, Wallingford, Milton Keynes and many more.
