The growth of Islamophobic thought is the combination of two trends. First, is the state-sponsored racism against Muslims that builds upon older prejudices. Politicians are keen to scapegoat what they see as Islamic culture for their own failings. The second trend, is the way that much of the liberal left has failed to challenge this.
They go along with the bigotry that claims there is something uniquely backward about Islam that makes it incompatible with “British” or even European 'Christian' values—though exactly what such 'values' are is rarely specified. In the political space that's created far right and fascist parties can grow.
This meeting of Bristol Stokes Croft Socialist Workers Party probes the origins of racism and Islamophobia throughout Europe and the west, and argues the case for a fightback against bigotry and racism.
Thursday 11th October, 730pm, 5th Floor, Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft.
