this is a brief report that i did. it may be of interest. the debate / public meeting was held at st georges hall exeter. on tuesday the 7
gm debate roderickX, 09.09.2004 11:52 here is the re-posting becAUSE of the data loss the other file seems to have experienced.with respect i attended a public meeting entitled:
GM farm scale evalutions and env data 2004: the science behind the headlines...
this is my brief report,,
the original question possed by Mr.M. Meacher, 1998, was
\"How will growing GM crops effect farmland wildlife?\"
this was the basis for the study commisioned on behalf of DEFRA
the total budget was approx 5.9million uk pounds
the Royal Society Journal Published the study/ data, in a 150 page report. i will attempt to obtain a copy
the study was done, i quote, \" \'[with a mind to] create\' ...informed farming practice.\"
...speaker: Chris Pollack
Chair of ACRE
DIRECTOR OF GRASSLAND AND ENV RESEARCH< WALES
Quote,\'the hand of man lies on the landscape..\" spoke on topic inluding_transitional environments. human effect. the history contained within the pollen record.. ongoing proccess\'s_ he stated, \"\'..that it is importqant to create\' ... balance between farming and bio-diversity!\"_example: n.b. 50\'s n 60\'s.. etc...
-hericide resistance/ tolerant crops__-...........Prof Joe.Perry _ of
Ruthumstead Institute1840-1990 the Ruthumstead Institute concentrated on plant proccess and
since 1990 has been involved in investigating farm scale proccess\'s. he talked about interesing projects like the beetle bank and entomology_including:LEAF: linking environment and farming..
which he stated are designed to work with organic or conventional farming systems:..to improve profit and re-inforce bio-diversity.
also of the Curry report, quoting that it implies that the farmers are \"the stewards of the countryside.\" #

studies
1983-88 box worth: 1989 scarab and talisman: 1989 life experiment: 1992 link……….< i missed one...
farm scale trials consisted of: 500 evaluations, two half fields each study.
flow chart: efficiency of analysis
power to detect effect rep to achieve power
costs and benefits of experiment
…Les Firbank: Scottish crop research institute:..
conv GM
beet *
maize *
rape *
promotes bio-diversity where marked
maize crops showed increased bio-dev, attributed to a larger amount of plant detritus from weeds, because they are killed/ controlled later in the production cycle.. the panel stated that there was a system of continious data collection beyond original time frame to confirm and support results...... a member of th panel stated briefly that: GM Maize has been grown in the SW without reg and such........ I forget his name! stated. i leave it anon
conservationist
\"herbicide management is important.\"
also pushes th precautionary principle, stating its one of the best things to come out of europe!..
the Arable Group has 2300 members and aims to maximise profit for farmers, improve standards and environmental quality.
considers the products of products at global competitive prices..
…farming sector speaker said, he recently became aware of the impact of farming on the landscape and sees this as a new challenge
\"the djinni\'s out of the bottle.\" Quote. there are, he did, proposal for dual strategy farm practice. <\" \'farming for bio-diversity in appropriate areas of the farm whilst continuing to use farm tech, conventionaly and for higher yeilds with less attention to bio-diversity, in others.\" \'> organic bio-diversity study released l8r this year
a member of th audience mentioned that it is relevant to investigate the: set aside data...
calls from the floor for a broader study to include the effects of GM on mamals (maybe also to include pollen effects, allergies etc...)
X.. said no to a dichotomus farming practice and land management trend. i said, here here
GOV.../ says novel aggri-sys/ have th potential for lessening th ENV footprint of farming wether this include GM tech or not. and that this IS desirable. Quote: \"figuring out how is possibly easier thasn working out the costings...\" quote
gene flow data.. science magazine nov 03 shela Anderson, of the N>E>R>C> says there was a four year study.
