A Feminist and Secular Perspective

Public meeting in Sherborne, Dorset, Friday 14 July 2006

Azar Majedi, of the Organisation for Women's Liberation, and producer and host of TV programmes on The New Channel (www.newchannel.tv), including "No to Political Islam", will speak at a public meeting in Sherborne on 14 July. The meeting will cover feminist and secular resistance to both Islamic fundamentalism and US aggression, and the situation of women in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries. Also speaking will be Maryam Kousha, Editor of the Organisation for Women's Liberation English journal.

The Organisation for Women's Liberation campaigns for the unconditional liberation of women and complete equality between women and men in Iran. Its aims include the abolition of discriminatory laws, especially in relation to family, marriage, divorce and parental responsibility for children; the abolition of compulsory veiling; the abolition of segregation; equal access to resources in education, employment, sports and cultural activities, and the separation of religion from the state and education.

"The ruling system in Iran is a system of total sexual apartheid" said Azar Majedi. "In Iran there is a strong social and political movement against the Islamic regime. Iranian people are fed up with Islamic society. Political Islam was used as an alternative to gain power after the failure of Arab nationalism in the Middle east. The Islamic state in Iran was engineered by the US to prevent a left-wing government in 1979."

The public meeting will take place in the Methodist Church hall, Cheap St, Sherborne on Friday 14 July at 7.30pm. It is hosted by the Yeovil, Sherborne and Area Stop the War Coalition. Entry is free but donations are welcome.
