Home care workers march on LibDem ward this Friday

category bristol | local government | announcement author Tuesday April 17, 2007 22:29author by Solidarity - The working class Report this post to the editors

Will Kiely & Malik go into hiding, or just get one?

Back on 22 March Bristol City Council agreed a proposal by LibDem cabinet member John Kiely (Easton ward) to privatise the remaining in-house home care service (see http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26039 & http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26086)

Since then the workers have been out and about protesting loudly about this attack on services for older & disabled vulnerable people in the community, and the attack on their jobs and conditions. This Friday, 20 April, at 2pm, they will march for a second time in Kiely’s Easton ward – meet 2pm on St Marks Rd, Easton, BS5. The event is backed by the TGWU.

St Marks Rd happens to be at the centre of wannabee-Mayor, and other Easton LibDem con-cillor, Abdul Malik’s business empire, with businesses on both St Marks Rd and Roman Rd, handily placed on the march route. St Marks Rd also features a contact office for the local LibDems. So if you happen to see Kiely or Malik, you know what to say and do! Kiely is also up for re-election on May 3 – don’t vote for the community traitor.

Here’s a quote from the leaflet advertising the march: ”Home care is a critically important service, it should not be sold off at public auction to the cheapest bidder. The council should manage its own in-house service properly; it is the best chance of providing a service for Bristol to be proud of. We need our service users, their families and all people in Bristol to support us. We will not abandon our service users. Please join our march.”
There is also an online petition at http://www.bristol.gov.uk/item/epetition.html which ends on 30 April.

There will be a rally & refreshments after the march at Easton Community centre.

Support our brothers and sisters in struggle!
