Bristol's Public Museum Set to Promote Corporate Greenwashing

Shell is the second largest oil company in the world. It is also the sponsor of the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which is scheduled to appear at the Bristol Museum starting December 15th.

Despite attempts to ‘greenwash’ its reputation via blanket advertising and cultural sponsorship, Shell is still heavily implicated in producing ever-greater quantities of the oil and gas that are destabilising our climate to such an alarming degree. Climate change is set to wipe out millions of plant and animal species and to devastate the poorest regions of the planet. Shell’s activities also result in oil spills which are major causes of death and destruction for many varieties of life.

Shell is currently constructing a massive development at Sakhalin Island in Russia which is threatening the survival of the Western Pacific Grey Whale. Closer to home, its refinery and pipeline project in County Mayo, Ireland threatens a pristine ecosystem, not to mention the homes and livelihoods of the inhabitants. For all these reasons, Shell should not be sponsoring the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. We call on the Bristol Museum to reject the exhibition until the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine end their sponsorship deal with Shell.

What You Can Do:

1) Contact your Bristol City Councillor and ask them to pull the plug on this exhibition http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Council-Democracy/Elected-Representatives/councillor-finder.en

2) E-Mail the Natural History Museum and Ask them to drop Shell as a sponsor:

3) Help Organize Bristol’s Response to Shell’s Greenwash:
Come to the organizing meeting and help us make it clear that Bristol will not tolerate its public institutions being used to greenwash environmentally destructive companies. We will be meeting at 7:30pm on Wednesday November 21st at the Forester Pub at 99 Gloucester Rd. There have been rumours that wildlife threatened by Shell will make their howls and cries heard at the museum in December if the exhibition goes ahead. Come be a part of the action!
