people; it is in the US's strategic and economic interests to put our people in danger as
long as its own regional interests are met. That is why our people do not consider the US
a "liberator" of our country. The US invaded Afghanistan under the name of human rights
and democracy but today we are as far from these values as were 5 years ago. However,
since 2001 the death toll of innocent civilians as a result of the so-called "war on
terror" is five times the number killed in the 9/11 tragedy." Malalai Joya.
This is a "must see" film about an inspiring activist, Malalai Joya, who became elected to parliament in Kabul because of her passionate quest to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people. Her bravery is immeasurable and her safety is in danger as the film shows her verbally attacking powerful warlords whose consideration for the people of Afghanistan is minimal to say the least.
We should fear for the safety of Malalai Joya, whose innate sense of right and wrong compels her to act for her people. But her bravery in speaking out has made her many powerful enemies.
But there was barely a mention in the film of the role that the US-UK are playing and one could leave the cinema with the impression that we are the good guys because of our condemnation of the warlords.
Until one considers the provenance of the film, Denmark, one G W Bush's, "Coalition of the Willing". And the coalition of the willing are not in Afghanistan for the benefit of Afghanistan's people, but for our own strategic ends.
Those who saw the film last night may also be interested to read what Malalai Joya says about the way that the US-UK is "spreading democracy" in her country:-
