Bristol Anarchist Bookfair Kicks Off

Davey Gower of the Bookfair Collective writes; Roll up! Roll up! Blast away those damp summer blues and get yourself down to the Bristol Anarchist Bookfair for a date with the freethinking autonomous resistance from Bristol, the South West & South Wales. A printed bookfair programme will be available on the day, but you can get all the bookfair details online now...This free event includes 26 stalls from independent publishers, distributors, bookshops and local and national campaign groups. There are also 25 workshops including talks on anarchist principles and tactics, the economy, climate change and transition towns, a bicycle maintenance workshop, a lesson in Taiji, and an 'alternative' cycling tour of Bristol. Added to that is live acoustic music in the courtyard and the Kebele community co-operative – Bristol’s long-running radical social centre – will be in the kitchen providing a cheap all-day café, proving how delicious vegan food can be....Anarchism is about mutual aid, solidarity, autonomy and social change. It’s about class politics, resisting injustice and exploitation and defending the earth we live on. Anarchism emerged as a defined movement in the mid-19th century as part of the struggles of the growing European working class. Yet its origins can be traced back centuries to whenever people came together to resist oppression, to whenever people tried to live peacefully in harmony with the environment around them. Bristol Indymedia will also be at the event! We are running a stall and a talk/discussion; Getting serious about media democracy at Room 7 at 11am; The media is dominated by a small group of individuals like Murdoch, and multinational corporations such as Viacom. As a result the predominant tide of media offers a largely homogenous top-down view of the world centred on corporate globalisation and neo-liberal economics. What are the implications for those struggling to present alternative views of the world? How can alternatives be presented to a population that has only known a corporate media? Can we use their media to get our message out or should we concentrate on building our own media? Hope to see you there!
