Cabot Cancer- the new Consumer Disease

A call to action came today to disrupt the farcical opening ceremony of Bristol’s brand new abomination.

Taking centre stage
Taking centre stage

CRUNCH CABOT CREDIT CIRCUS was emblazoned across the vile new complex’s advertising hoard in plain view of motorists arriving through the newly routed, soon to be congested, road system that snakes around the £500 million project that offers yet more sterile, soulless, capitalist consumerism.

The ridiculous timing of the advent of this unnecessary monstrosity, during the so-called ‘credit crunch’, offers the opportunity to think about just how little community consultation took place; about the mass displacement of the poorer sections of our community to make way for its construction; and about the sheer slap in the face to people on low-incomes whose lives hang in the balance as banks crumble and credit becomes scarce. All the while the Bristol (Imperial) Alliance siphon off what profits they might make, out of our city, to Birmingham, London and the hands of a few corporate profiteers.

This rupture with the Alliance’s image and ethos – where ‘retail therapy’ has replaced community contact and our social interactions are increasingly channeled through monetary transactions and materialist consumption – serves as an exclamation. This is a call for further and sustained action against this odious symbol of aggressive global capitalism and the gentrification that is seeping into our city.

Already full of empty shops, at such a financially unstable time, if it doesn’t crumble of its own accord, this disease must be purged from the city,

BUY LESS, LIVE MORE!

Take your own actions!

Whistle crews, musical chair shop invasions, dress like the drones that make this shambolic circus possible and cause some mischief!

Join the Zombie march this Saturday the 27th of Sept, assemble 11am at the Bandstand in Castle Park, shamble & lurch from noon.

I'll be coming! Look forward to meeting at 11 in my drone outfit.

Would it be ok to stop by Harvey Nicks on the way round so I can buy some novelty cufflinks?

In the light of the Corporate Circus launch, how about this for blatant, PR bollocks hypocrisy……

http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Environment-Plann...al.en
The Bristol Partnership (which brings together leaders from the public, private, business, community and voluntary sectors to establish) has set an ambitious agenda for the city towards creating a high quality environment, tackling the causes of climate change and creating a clean and attractive built and natural environment.

…and this Bristol City Council Press Release Date, dated 27-Feb-2007.
http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/press-releases/20...al.en

“Bristol pledges action as Green Capital.”

Organisations across Bristol will pledge action as the city launches its bid to be recognised as the leading 'green' city in the country…

Council Leader and Chair of the Bristol Partnership, Barbara Janke said: “Climate change is not just a global issue. Potential changes in sea levels and temperature make this a local concern too. Therefore, this event is more than just rhetoric. It is about facilitating and encouraging action. The Pledge will build upon Bristol's reputation as a city that is already making a significant contribution towards a more sustainable future for all.”

The event is organised by the Bristol Partnership and sponsored by the Environment Agency and Bristol City Council.

The keynote address will be made by Peter Madden, Chief Executive of Forum for the Future. Organisations attending from across the city will be inspired by speakers and case studies of local organisations already setting a green example. They will then be asked to sign a pledge to make Bristol a low-carbon city.

“local organisations ….. will be asked to sign a pledge to make Bristol a low-carbon city.! !?

Hm.

Mystery Shopper you are right about the Establishment pseudo-greenery. They have realised that they cannot deny the environmental crises that they have created any longer, and are now in full flow co-opting environmentalism to fit their agenda.

What gets me is that when you talk to Bristolians they are not in the least fooled by the bullshit rhetoric spewing out of the mouths of the Great and the Good. But Bristolians know from long and bitter experience that the Great and the Good will just get their way regardless.

No, it is the comfy, trendy and supposedly educated classes in places like Bishopston, Montpelier, St Werburgh's, Easton etc who always buy into the bullshit and create a "moral majority" that puts down anyone who challenges the orthodoxy.

It may be bullshit, but it has created 4000 new jobs for people who may have lost jobs, want a career in retail, put food on the table for their families. So while the credit crunch is upon us,whereas others lose jobs, people gain them!and it may be an eyesore for the city, but thousands like it,and if you don't there's still the better parts of bristol to enjoy, without bogging yourself down with Cabot Circus.
