Carbon Dinosaur LNG Power station opening in Devon

category devon | the environment | announcement author Tuesday November 11, 2008 12:52author by Ignite Report this post to the editors

Gas from Milford Haven in Wales is being piped to South Devon for massive 855MW energy plant.

The latest carbon dinosaur is about to have an opening ceremony maybe next month or early in the new year. It is the Centrica (they were called British Gas PLC) £400 million development at Langage, just off the A38 between Ivybridge and Plympton in Devon. It would be good if people got together to educate and demonstrate the public's anger at yet another carbon monster being opened - The First in Britain for 5 years and the biggest one in Devon or Cornwall for 30+ years.

Please forward this article to all interested people and Groups.

People are needed to help co-ordinate local groups / national groups and to go visit the plant.
Articles by writers in the alternative and national press might be very helpful.

It will produce a massive 855 Megawatts of power, and uses gas that is shipped from the far
side of the world.

The power station project also underpins the development of the Langage Energy Park,
which is a separate development owned by Carlton Power. It is designed to use a massive
amount of power and take a high percentage of the output of Langage.

Here is some back ground:-

On the outskirts of Plympton, just fifty yards from the A38, is 30 acres of this land for the new
gas-fired power station that the Government approved in November 2000.

Green expanse has become home to the power station. Many residents in nearby
Chaddlewood are worried But since permission for the power station was granted both the
residents and Plymouth and South Hams councils feel they've had no chance to thrash out
their concerns with developer Centrica. Councilor David James says that since permission was granted the developer's hardly been in touch.

the 30 acre site.

" Owned and operated by UK energy giant Centrica, work began on the facility in 2006, at a
cost of £400 million. The gas-fired plant which will power more than 1 million homes is due to
open in early 2009 and is billed as one of the cleanest and most efficient power stations in
the world. "

WHERE THE GAS COMES INTO BRITAIN

Liquid natural gas (LNG) terminals in Pembrokeshire, Wales will receive the gas from fields in the Middle East and the Far East.

A terminal near Milford Haven has been specially adapted to take the huge LNG tankers.
New jetties and terminals have being constructed near Waterston village and South Hook,
part of the Millford Haven complex.
Evidence has been obtained that the UK government took a strong interest in the
developments when the planning applications were submitted for the Millford Haven works.
The programme used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain part of an e-mail
conversation between the Department of Trade and Industry and the Health and Safety
Executive in March 2004.
In the e-mail exchange, an DTI official said "the project is very important to UK plc" and that
the DTI had been "working hard to secure the necessary regulatory consents from the
European Commission."
A group of local residents called Safe Haven failed in a judicial review of these planning
decisions in the High Court in July 2005.

The terminal will be operated by Dragon LNG, a consortium involving the British Gas Group
Plc, Petronas from Malaysia and Dutch-owned Petroplus and a firm called 4Gas.

WHERE THE GAS IS IMPORTED FROM
( some of the most politically troubled areas of the world - because they have the gas)

The gas will be supplied by Centrica, Malaysian company Petronas and Oil giant Exxon
Mobil. Friends of the Earth Cymru campaigner, Neil Crumpton, said "LNG was about 20 to
30% less efficient compared to North Sea gas. This was because, he said, the liquefying
process was very energy intensive. It has to be liquefied to transport it from the Middle East
(and Far East)."

Massive newly built tankers will deliver the LNG to Centrica from Qatar in the Middle East
and from Malaysia.

Aceh (yes where the tsunami hit in 2004) is in the Indonesian Arkipelago and Exxon Mobil is
extracting a lot of gas from there. Some of this gas may well be transported for use at
Langage.

Exxon have been resisted by GAM - the Free Aceh Movement in the past, but now peace
talks have resulted in more gas revenues staying in the local communities.

It's also been discussed that gas from West Papua ( fromally known ask Irian Jaya ) may
also be shipped to Millford Haven in Wales. It is a simple deduction to work out that some of
it will be used at Langage, Devon.

In West Papua, British Petroleum ( now part of BP Amoco) have been working on 3 massive
terminals costing over $10 billion at the Arun and Bontang LNG plants and the Tangguh
project. British Gas Group Plc, parent company of BG Exploration & Production Ltd also
have a major stake in the Tangguh project.
