Candlelit Vigil for Tibet

category bristol | peace | event notice author Wednesday February 18, 2009 16:40author by tejista - Free Tibet Report this post to the editors

Candlelit Vigil for Tibet: to remember those who have died under the Chinese occupation of their homeland.

Tuesday 24 February from 5:00 to 7:00pm
by the fountains on Broad Quay / Canon's Road (near the city centre ferry landing).
This will be a sombre event, joining exiled Tibetans in remembering those who have died under Chinese rule.

Tibetans worldwide have made the decision to
cancel celebrations for Losar, their New Year (25 February onwards),
to mark the deaths of Tibetans who died in the uprising against China
last year, and in the last 50 years of Chinese occupation.

March and April 2008 saw the largest protests in Tibet for 50 years. China's response was swift and brutal. Today a climate of fear reigns. It is estimated that over 6,000 Tibetans were detained in connection to the protests, and protesters are still being arrested today. The fate of over 1,000 people remains unknown, rendering them extremely vulnerable to torture.

Bring your Tibetan flags, prayer flags, candles/nightlights in jamjars etc. to show your support for a free Tibet.

Please also try to join the national demonstration in London on Saturday 7 March, marking 50 years of peaceful resistance to the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
