Anti-BNP activists take to the streets on election day

Anti-fascists brave BNP stronghold to give out pastries

Groups of anti-BNP activists took to the streets to inform the public about the true nature of the BNP, who have been casting themesevles as "The only option for the working class of Britain". A free cafe was set up in Fishponds where the BNP has previously registered the largest following, coming third in the last elections and threatening to gain a seat at today's. Leaflets were distributed and many heated discussions took place as the polling station throbbed with political thought, and voters of all ages were enraged at the sleeze soaked system. The lasted expenses scandle was bound to incite some kind of a backlash - what a pity our bail-out ballot system left some feeling there was only means left of registering their 'protest' vote.

Many elderly people who have always voted in the past declared that this time they simply refused to cast a vote. Activists endeavoured to promote the rights of refugees to asylum. A refugee doctor from Belarus gave a brief speech on his struggle to remain in Britain facing persecution and violence in his homeland. A BNP supporter tried to justify his annual holidays to the Phillipines while refusing the right of 'foreigners' to enter this country.

Around 2 o'clock BNP representatives replete with rossettes arrived to accuse the leafletters of 'anti-democratic activity' and swiftly threatened them with retaliation from Redwatch users. About an hour later, a riot van arrived and forced the stall to close due to the apparent danger of a 'breach in the peace' should it remain open.

It seems unfortunate that individuals are prevented from protesting against racism in their streets 'for their own safety' but at the end of the day it opened up discussion and *hopefully* has helped keep the BNP out of Bristol.
