Elevating Easton: Developing the city through community consultation

Main gallery, First Floor: Architecture Centre, Bristol
3rd November - 22nd November
Easton is a vibrant, multi-cultural, yet deprived inner city ward in Bristol. This ward has seen a high level of organic regeneration due to its proximity to the city centre, most of which has occurred in an ad-hoc manner. An influx of young professionals and creative types has been juxtaposed with a host of derelict sites and a lack of sustainable local amenities.

The Love Easton Urban Design Task Group was formed in February 2009 by a group of residents. It aims to create a strategic document for the Easton area to help transform it in a controlled manner, falling in line with the visions and aspirations of the local community and city wide policy. Their objective is to work in a small group to find pioneering and innovative ways to encourage the community to have their say and be involved in the consultation process to transform their neighbourhood.

Masters students from Sheffield University Architecture Department will lead an intensive consultation process on a 6-week visit to Bristol in the autumn. The starting point is to find out what local people think, feel and want from their neighbourhood, and new mapping techniques will be used to analyse resident responses, drawing out themes and important information missed by conventional reports.

This exhibition falls at the end of the student visit, showcasing the students’ work and the feedback from residents, opening the debate for feedback from a wider city audience. There will also be discussion around wider city planning issues and the way this currently operates within Bristol City Council.
