![]() discussion meeting led by Martin Upchurch (co-author of 'The Crisis of Social Democratic Trade Unionism in Western Europe: the Search for Alternatives'). 730pm, Wednesday October 28th, Hawks Gym, 11 Roman Road, Easton. The past decade has seen the emergence of a new left, particularly in Europe. Fragile and uneven though this process has been, it represents a real attempt to develop a progressive alternative to neoliberalism, war and indeed capitalism itself. In Germany Die Linke has now established itself a serious force to the left of the SPD. Similar devlopments have occurred in France with the creation of the Nouveau Parti Anti-Capitaliste (NPA), in Portugal with electoral success for the Left Bloc, and in Greece with the left coalition Synaspimos. Such parties are committed to opposing neo-liberalism and marketisation of public services in contrast to the traditional parties of social democracy such as the British Labour Party. This meeting will discuss the significance of these developments and the prospects of left unity in Britain. |
