Bristols very own bonfire 'Guy' will be .......

category bristol | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday November 04, 2009 16:01author by Guido Fawkes is back. - Bristol Bonfire Society Report this post to the editors

Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, United Kingdom.

We need 'Bristol Guy / Effigy suggestions urgently!

Bonfire night is primarily marked in the United Kingdom where it was compulsory, by fiat, until 1859, to celebrate the deliverance of the King of Great Britain; but, it is also celebrated in former British colonies including New Zealand, Newfoundland, and parts of the British Caribbean.

In other parts of the country effigies are burned instead of 'Guys' (Guido Fawkes) for example a twin effigy of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand will be set on fire as part of a Kent bonfire society's Guy Fawkes celebrations.

The celebrity guy depicts Ross clutching a BBC contract in his right hand and holding a dog with Brand's head under his left arm.

A huge effigy of glamour model Katie Price is to be set on fire as part of a Kent bonfire society's celebrations to mark Guy Fawkes night.

The 30ft (9.1m) celebrity guy depicts Price, also known as Jordan, holding the heads of her former husband Peter Andre and current boyfriend Alex Reid.

The effigy will be burnt by the Edenbridge Bonfire Society on Saturday.

Last year's celebrity guy was Cherie Blair.

Other past effigies have included racing pundit John McCririck, Saddam Hussein and politicians John Prescott and Edwina Currie.

Not much time left but we are looking for ideas for Bristol Guys to be burnt this weekend, so far the right hon. Dawn Primarolo, and Andy Wright of the Western Daily Press have had their names put forward.

Which Bristol 'name' or face would you most like to see burnt in effigy? ........... A politician? ........... A capitalist? ............. let us know who you think should go up in smoke?

Robert Cecil was one helluva schemer and you know how governments love to have some group to hate.
Back in the early 17th Century it was Catholics.
Here is one account.
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/STUgunpowderP.htm

"Francis Tresham was arrested on 12th November. In the Tower of London he wrote a full confession about his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot. However, many people believed he was working as a double agent for Robert Cecil.

Everard Digby, Robert Wintour and Thomas Bates, were executed on 30th January, 1606. Digby was hanged for only a short period and was still alive when he was disembowelled. The following day Guy Fawkes and Thomas Wintour were hanged, drawn and quartered.

In recent years some historians have begun to question the traditional story of the Gunpowder Plot. Some have argued that the conspiracy was really devised by Robert Cecil and Lord Monteagle. This version claims that Cecil blackmailed Robert Catesby into organising the plot. It is argued that Cecil's aim was to make people in England hate Catholics. For example, people were so angry after they found out about the plot, that they agreed to Cecil's plans to pass a series of laws persecuting Catholics.

It has also been pointed out that James I gave Lord Monteagle an annuity of £500 for life, plus lands worth a further £200 per year. Rumours soon began circulating that Monteagle had arranged for Francis Tresham to be poisoned while being held captive in the Tower of London."

Peter Mandelson.
If ever anybody should be burnt in effigy its that sleezy slimeball Peter mandelson.
Thanks to scum like him and Bliar, millions of working-class folk have had their political party stolen from them, and therefore have no real place to go at election time anymore.

I find it depressing that Katie Price was chosen. What crime has she committed other than being a strong independent woman who was dumped and has a healthy f**** you attitude towards her ex who is now milking their previous association for every penny. Oh and she likes to party. Seems Kent has some closet Taliban in their midst!

OK rant over.. I would put Tony Blair and the odious Archbishop "Sharia Law" Rowan Williams on the bonfire, alongside Nick Griffin. And I'd give Ayan Hirsi Ali the matches.

Who to burn as a guy on a bonfire hmmmmmmmm? ... that's easy ... burn the troll!

I never suggested Jordan was or should be a feminist icon. Merely that I abhor the misogynist attitude of the media and much of the public towards her.

Oh and if theres any more room on this bonfire can we put this scuzzball on it too, along with his friend Mugabe?

I never heard of an "ISLAMOPGHOBOBE" before you posted it up.

Was it some kind of spelling error? .... or does it actually mean anything?

Clarification please.

"Why do you HATE ALL MUSLIMS"

I was wondering when someone was going to come out with something like that.

Wanting a secular legal system which gives equal rights to women does not make me an islamaphobe. We live in the 21st Century. Religion should have no place in law - whether that be Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Scientologist.

You do know I was being sarcastic, don't you? PS, an "ISLAMOPGHOBOBE" is like a ZIONSIT or a US IMPERIALSIM, and similar to a BUSH BLIAR!

I dont think its got anything to do with anybodys sense of humour 'failure'
The only failure here is in your ability to communicate coherently.
This project is a good one, its doing good work, and it makes a positive and sustainable difference to those who use it, and to the streets of bristol.
Its about more bikes, and less cars, thats good for everybody, and for the environment.
