Hinkley barnstormers call for support
Anti-nuclear activists who are occupying a farmyard on land earmarked for a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point are calling for support to ensure that their imminent eviction is carried out peacefully.
Yesterday, EDF Energy won a High Court order to evict the protesters after a two-week occupation. One of the farm’s residents, Theo Simon, said the crew was asking for people in the South West to come and ‘bear witness’ to the eviction.
Theo, who is part of the festival band, Seize The Day, said: “We would really appreciate a show of solidarity with what has been achieved here and to ensure that we can leave in a dignified way that is under our control. It would be great if people could also help us move all the gear that has been so kindly donated by local supporters.”
Another resident, Shana Deal, added that there is safe access to the site. “It’s not a war zone. There are rights of way across the site so there’s easy access. The more people who are here, the more we can be sure of an orderly and safe exit.”
She added: “At this stage, the eviction could be tonight or it could be at the end of week. We just don’t know. We’d ask people who are interested in supporting us to call the camp phone for the latest state of play.”
The camp hotline is: 07805-666239
