![]() The dreadful massacre of 34 platinum miners at the British owned Lonmin mine at Marikana exposed deep fissures in South African society. The strike was over pay, with workers rightly demanding big rises. This has led to splits between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), South Africa’s traditional mine union, and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which argues for a more militant approach. But the slaughter also evoked memories of how the police acted during apartheid and has raised questions about the leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) in the post apartheid years. This discussion meeting hosted by Bristol Stokes Croft Socialist Workers Party will try to explain what has been happening in South Africa, and to look at how the fading hopes and dreams of the brave years of fighting apartheid can be rekindled by a new wave of struggle.
