![]() Obama 'drone-warfare rulebook' condemned by human rights groups New York Times reports administration attempting to set out circumstances in which targeted assassination is justified. This was the headline of an article in today's Guardian - see link below. As pointed out last week on Bristol Indymedia, Bristol based University of the West of England has a whole department dedicated to-

As Communists they went completely un-armed I suppose.
The above comment really does underline that paucity of thought by those anti capitalists that jump on any bandwagon to attack capitalism.
It does the anti war campaign no good whatsoever to be smeared by adolescent use of the f word coupled with a demonstration of the writers lack of knowledge of recent history.
The militarisation of education has even taken place within the Bristol University Maths Department.

By the same logic that Washington justifies its “right” to fire remote-control missiles at tribesmen in Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, other governments will assert their “right” to use the same methods against political opponents, whether armed guerrillas or mass social movements.

Companies and universities are known to use worthy and innocent looking fronts to hide the real, seedy goings on, i.e. components related to arms manufacture.

Call to Arms: The University as a Site of Militarised Capitalism and a Site of Struggle
“Student protests around the UK against university involvement with arms companies raise the question of the role of the university in contemporary society.
This article discusses Bristol University as an illustrative case, focusing on its relationship with arms capital through its pension schemes and the research it carries out for arms companies and the military.
It then documents and analyses student resistance to this relationship on the basis of opposition to the corporatisation of higher education in general and the militarisation of science and engineering in particular.
The article then discusses universities as sites of social struggle and outlines potential strategies for activist academic practice.”

Now doubt this capitalist ploy to own things is just an act of convenience.
But shame how you have to pay for such thoughts tho?
How "capitalist" is that?

"But the above post - whilst a quite reasonable one - is NOT by me - Realist."
Quite reasonable? Alex Jones?
Yes he just had to mention the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds didn't he? He just had to bring in the supposed "anti-human, anti-family agenda" of the illuminati reptiloid communist environmentalist satanist antichrist didn't he?
There may be facts in there but you have to wade through a hell of a lot of bullshit to get to them.
What i meant was that it was quite reasonable in the context of what the sad clone normally posts - under the name of others - vitriolic bile and obscenities.
From that view point the post however silly - was at least "adult".
But I agree with your overall analysis.
We live in dangerous times.

If they blow up civilians with their car bombs etc.
They know that there is no hiding place
As someone who has family in the army - I celebrate the fact that drones puts no one at risk on our side.
I would suggest that the vast majority of people in the UK - not just Bristol would say the same.
It is easy to be anti this and anti that from the warmth of your bedroom spouting out a new world order.
Some of us live and deal with the real world
An eye for and eye makes both parties blind - unless your eye is a remote one.
And for that I am grateful.
Angie, please don't post anything on here that may be interpreted as common sense and certainly don't point out to the self styled anarcists that a majority of people in this country don't support their idealistic, self serving nonesense or they will just brand you a Troll.
What you fail to understand is that although they like to bleat about freedom freedom of though and speech they actually only want those things for themselves, anybody who disagrees with them is ridiculed. You have to wonder what would happen to anyone openly arguing against them at one of their meetings/discussions.
Nobody of any consequence bothers to go.
You get the same old ranters - but that is about it
I for one am very disillusioned.
"As someone who has family in the army - I celebrate the fact that drones puts no one at risk on our side." - Angie
Your analysis is based on a them and us scenario with no grey areas. Unfortunately the "real world" in terms of warfare isn't like this at all. Drones are being used in remote areas where gathering intelligence is difficult and even those who use them do not know how many innocent civilians have been killed by them. In fact the evidence for an attack is usually from drones themselves, so they are the judge and jury. Who knows who else might be in the targeted installation ?
Modern battlefields are no longer large armies attacking each other in straight lines, civilians are also involved and it is those who ultimately pay the heaviest price.
"You have to wonder what would happen to anyone openly arguing against them at one of their meetings/discussions"
Oh I wouldn't worry about that USM, I've been along to hundreds of events by Indy-Anarcho-Green groups and constantly argue openly with people. I've never had anything worse than that people try arguing back for a while, get bogged down in their own internal contradictions, and then stomp off and try and ignore you forever more. Aside from bitching to all their friends that you must be a sexist/racist/unenlightened/moron, pretty fluffy really, if you can cope with the social ostracism.
You say:-
"Drones are being used in remote areas where gathering intelligence is difficult and even those who use them do not know how many innocent civilians have been killed by them."
And do the perpetrators of the car bomb that actually TARGETS civilians have any idea of thenumber of innocents THEY have killed and maimed?
I fail to see the difference.
I would rather nobody dies for me or in my name.
But given the choice - when you have people so morally obscene that they shoot a 14 year old girl in the head because she wants an education and what the moral deficients want is to make a sex object/slave of all women such that taking a gun and actually shooting a child in the head because you have run out of arguments/reasons WHY a female should accept her place in life - I for one would like to see those arrogant child killing barstewards get a rocket up their arse be it from a Drone or whatever.
Most women I meet think the same.
I very much appreciate your point about how women and girls are treated in Afghanistan. Unfortunately however, the fact is that blowing people away with drones, or whatever, is not going to make a blind bit of positive difference, except to make you feel like you're getting some kind of vicarious revenge.
All that's going to happen in Afghanistan is that it will polarise people even more, and make people there see the West as barbarous killers. And as for the rest of the world, well, women are treated appallingly by Western standards in Saudi Arabia, Iraq & India to name a few of the West's dear allies, and so don't expect to see a finger raised to do anything there. Millions of women in South America have such miserable lives that many fall ionto serious mental illness or see suicide as a preferable option. Africa? Clitoridectomy? Kindoki? Don't even go there!
And don't forget that poverty-stricken boys and men throughout the world are also vulnerable to constant abuse up to and including male rape, torture and murder on a regular basis.
Even if the West could make the tiniest bit of difference by using violence and slaughter against offending parties, as you suggest, do we in the West really want to expend our blood and treasure on policing the world?
Do we really want to take up the White Man's Burden once again?
How long will the British taxpayer support this?
Our armed forces are close to breaking point and most Brits are sick and tired of colonial adventuring and global do-gooding.
Do I ****.
What shows the world what we are is the help and support we give to the family and the shot girl via the fantastic treatment she is getting via the NHS here in the UK.
Those pictures are beamed around the world and in general people say "What happened to her? - She was shot by the taliban for wanting an education?? - the bastards!!!!!!"
All that is posted above is of course true. The despots and the moral deviants do terrible things all over the world.
But just because the reality is overwhelming for some - does not mean that when you have the resources and skills to make a difference - that you should sit back and do nothing.
And JHC - we have someone now talking about the "white mans burden" - sorry but I thought for a moment we had gone back in time>>>>>>>>>>>
first you would need to learn some manners AND the meaning of the word respect 'Alluminati'... maybe then somebody might care to engage with you... but somehow I doubt it :)
Angie, the phrase "white man's burden" (sic) reflects no more than the facts of what you are asking for.
You cheerfully condemn those who think differently to yourself as "moral deviants". But who gives you the right to take the moral highground over other cultures? By dismissing other cultural perspectives as moral deviation - presumably from your Western, Euro-American formed framework - you are no different from the Traditionalists and Race Realists (sic) who see Western civilization (sic) as possessing the sole Truth (sic), one that is superior to all others.
Our rulers don't give a toss about people in our armed forces and are just using them as cannon fodder.
I am surprised that someone who says they have relatives in the British armed forces is so eager to keep offering them up as sacrifices in a never-ending war that cannot be won and is fought both to exert Western hegemony and to make massive quantities of profit for Western arms manufacturers.
Awww, diddums, are your feelings hurt because I poked fun at Alex Jones?
Handy Tip: if its "manners and "respect" you want, then you've probably mixed me up with a servant.
Should take some time and go and see the real world and not one manufactured from sound bites.
Which is all the ridiculous cliche ridden post above consists of.
The "culture" of that family is that the parents want education for all.
The moral deviants that are the taliban do not want that and so shoot the kid.
And yet I am somehow at fault in your eyes because I dare to question this.
Unbelievable!
No, you're just naive for thinking you can change millions of people's minds by blowing them up. The millions of people chopping up their childrens genitals aren't going to change their culture just cos you don't like it. The millions who think women should be flogged for getting raped aren't going to change for you.
Furthermore I think its great what NATO is doing in Afghanistan, any people that refuse to accept western standards and values should be bombed back into the stone-age, then we can let the corporations help themselves to all their resources, and I'll get even richer!
I make a sensible point you can not deal with and you call me "sweet cheeks"
Says all about you
And all about your arrogance born of ignorance.
The above comment is not mine.
No idea who it is
But i suspect it is typical spin lies and crap by those who have no way of dealing with a sensible point of view differing from their own.
It is nothing less than a cheap smear. I suspect you would get a thrill from listening to other peoples phone messages.
I expected more from here
Very sorry that BIM has been taken over by those with no moral compass.

Whatever
Oh - and the male chauvinist in you such that you call me Sweetcheeks is probably echoed in the mind of the male deviant that pointed the gun at a 14 year old girls head and pulled the trigger.
Some issues Angie? You seem to think you can solve the world's problems by frothing about "moral deviants" and demanding that the Government Do Something - like blasting the hell out of millions of people on the other side of the world that are nothing whatever to do with you, apparently because you've read about some celebrity case in the paper.
You're presenting yourself here as some kind of feminist, and going by your eagerness to play along to the US Christian Right agenda that sure figures.

WHAT??????????
Who on EARTH would not call a man who shoots a 14 year ld girl in the head for wanting an education a moral deviant?
Frankly I am amazed that anyone could set out to be an apologist for such an appalling action?
I do not demand that the government do something - that fiction you made up in YOUR head
Nor do I desire the blasting of millions of people - just those that shoot kids who want an education would do me thanks!!!!!!!
As for the case of the having nothing to do with me - well FUCK YOU MORON - I want that girl to live - i want that girl to have a happy life - i want that girl to recover - I want that girl to be an inspiration to her "culture"
As for my "apparently reading a celebrity case in the paper" - if you think a bullet in the brain makes a celebrity can I suggest you apply to ITV as they run a sideshow against reality where some "celebrities" could do with such attention.
As for your contribution to the debate - whatever you are - you seem to want to protect those that shoot children - as i say I suspect you would call them "sweetcheeks" whilst dishing out your Whitch Finder general fantasy.
Give him a tissue someone.

Bristol can - and does MUCH better than that!!!!!!!!
Poor 'Angie', you really are flailing around aren't you?
Your Angie identity first starts with:
................................................................................................................
"If they blow up civilians with their car bombs etc.
They know that there is no hiding place
As someone who has family in the army - I celebrate the fact that drones puts no one at risk on our side.
I would suggest that the vast majority of people in the UK - not just Bristol would say the same.

..................................................................................................................
So far so much EDL-style patriotic flannel. No mention of women, children or all the feminist stuff that you later start coming out with.
Quite why someone using the word "sweetcheeks" MUST be a MAN (horrors) is mysterious. Pretty inoffensive, it is used as the name of many businesses including bakery and sweet shop. Oh my GOD! You don't think they could be MORAL DEVIANTS do you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????????
That righteous indignation of yours is tremendous. You could take on the biggest Bible Bashers with that much abusive force.
I have the measure of you
What I write is entirely honest - from the heart.
What you write is snide ridden bullshit with accusations of my being an EDL member.
Hope you are proud of yourself you pathetic apology of a person.
"But given the choice - when you have people so morally obscene that they shoot a 14 year old girl in the head because she wants an education and what the moral deficients want is to make a sex object/slave of all women such that taking a gun and actually shooting a child in the head because you have run out of arguments/reasons WHY a female should accept her place in life - I for one would like to see those arrogant child killing barstewards get a rocket up their arse be it from a Drone or whatever."
OK Angie, stop hurling abuse at me and be straightforward then, as you say you are.
How many "moral deficients" in how many countries will you have to destroy in order to create your brave new world?
What will be your criteria for execution? Rape? Child abuse?
That will involve slaughtering millions of people in just about every country in the world. After all, here's enough rapists and child abusers in the UK alone to keep you busy for many, many years.
Tracking them down. Trying them ... you are going to try them aren't you?
No?
