Bristol's Anarchists Have Been Busy of Late Organising and Organising...

BABC of the Bookfair Collective writes; As the excitement builds in the run up to Bristol’s first anarchist bookfair in 15 years, bookfair organisers have 2 more benefit nights arranged in Bath & Bristol over the next seven days. These benefit nights allow us to raise the funds to pay for the bookfair, whilst having a good night out, ensuring there is no need for a formal entry fee at the bookfair itself. Anarchists eh, what a bunch of self-funding, self-organised idealists! Full article.

While Subvert writes; DIY folk punk duo Ghost Mice from Gainesville FL. play all acoustic at the Plough with Clayton Blizzard, Bones at the Bottom of the Barrel, and Dr. Spin with some of Anarco Folko. Any surplus will be donated to Anarchists Against the Wall. Full Article. (Image: Anarchist's go-at a section of the wall)

Bristol Indymedia Film Night Screens Multi-Award winning Doc: Monday 1st September 2008 8pm @ Cube Cinema

"Regardless of which side you are on in regards to the current war, you will be entranced by Enemies of Happiness. It is an important film which humanizes the people of Afghanistan by showing the daily struggles of everyday people and how the lingering ways of the previous regime still hover over their lives." screenrant.com

As the war in Afghanistan churns ever onwards without resolution; This months film night looks at the people of Afghanistan with the multi-award winning documentary by Danish filmmaker Vores Lykkes Fjender. Amongst its awards are 2007 Documentary World Cinema Jury Prize Winner (at the Sundance Film Festival), Silver Wolf Award, the Nestor Almendros Prize and an International Premiere Award. In September 2005, Afghanistan held its first parliamentary elections in 35 years. Among the candidates for 249 assembly seats was Malalai Joya, a courageous, controversial 27-year-old woman who had ignited outrage among hard-liners when she spoke out against corrupt warlords at the Grand Council of tribal elders in 2003. Enemies of Happiness is a revelatory portrait of this extraordinary freedom fighter and the way she won the hearts of voters, as well as a snapshot of life and politics in war-torn Afghanistan. Full Article.

(Note: we will also be selling tickets for October's event; Who Killed Dr David Kelly? - which we expect to be busy!)

People prepare to protest against vivisection in Ledbury...

AnimalAutonomon recently issued a call-out for people to Unite and fight for the animals - 6th Sept - Sequani Labs - Ledbury, Herefordshire UK. In a time when activists are being locked up for organising legal protests conventional activism needs to adapt to continue the fight against animal abusers. Autonomous action will and must be taken to bring the fight to industry exploiting this planet and its inhabitants - enough is enough... (Read more)

And NETCU Watch offered a personal perspective on the upcoming carnival: I have been protesting against Sequani labs for about 10 years now. Often it was a quick demo en route somewhere else or just a couple of us deciding to go there one afternoon. Until 2006 before Staffordshire police (bored after the closure of Darley Oaks farm)advised West Mercia police to eradicate ALL protest there was a fairly innocuous policing presence in Ledbury . In January 2006 Ledbury became a no go zone for ANY protest and in May 2006 operation Tornado was launched scooping up nearly everyone who had been outside the gates of either Sequani or a company associated with them... (Read more)

Lots more information on the history of the protests at Sequani labs can be found in the recent IndyMedia UK feature on the issue, or by visiting the Smash Sequani website.

Congratulations to Grass-Roots Media Project as it Celebrates 1st Birthday

The Bath Bomb Editorial Collective write; To celebrate our first anniversary, the Bath Bomb has teamed up for an exclusive partnership with the Bristol Evening Post, who are now offering a free Bath Bomb with every issue! Money-grubbing egghead MD Kevin Beatty, of media monopoly Associated Newspapers (proud pro-fascist owners of the Daily Mail, as well as Northcliffe Media - who have been busily buying out every local media outlet they can over the last 5 years and reducing them to the same generic mould) had this to say about the happy union: “…venture capitalism… caviar…tax loopholes…fourth holiday home in the Bahamas…co-opting anything radical and real….” Happy first birthday us! Now, we look eagerly forward to the next year of blandly censoring all opinion, cost cutting, and sacking surplus journos!.... Full article.
