I recently moved from Bristol to India. Looking back on my time in Bristol it is clear that, for all the bad press, a lot of people still had a sneaking suspicion that Western corporations are making some sort of contribution to improving the lot of people in the third world. Let me present a counter-example. read full story / add a comment

Persimmon has just given an artist from Redfield three hundred pounds as sponsorship for her exhibition of photos of the inside of the Elizabeth Shaw chocolate factory in Greenbank. Is this cheap and easy way to persuade everyone that they are very very nice, or purchasing the rights to put their name all over her exhibition and implying that they are winning the fight to buy the factory site? read full story / add a comment

The "Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award" exhibition comes to Bristol Museum from 15th December to 13th January. How can it be that the winner of the 2007 Goldman Environmental Prize (the highest honour awarded for protection of the environment) won that prize for resisting the environmental destruction being caused by the sponsor of the 2007 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award? While wildlife suffers the effects of oil exploration, spills and climate change, Shell oil executives shmooze shamelessly at highbrow cocktail events at the Natural History Museum admiring the splendour of the nature they are destroying, all while reaping good greenwashed pr for the company... It’s so sick.... ....read more at http://onthelevelblog.wordpress.com read full story / add a comment

How can Easton's most loved grocery store promote "Fairtrade" products when they fail to pay their own staff the minimum wage? Just imagine a world where the bosses of this shop had the mighty power of the supermarkets - you thought Tesco's were nasty capitalists, you haven't seen nothing!!!! Next time youre in there, watch how they treat their staff and if you're feeling brave, ask one of the bosses if they are paying the minimum wage to ALL of their employees. It's great to support local business, but only if they offer a better alternative than the corporations - not worse!! read full story / add a comment

People from Espacio Bristol-Colombia and Bristol Rising Tide today picketed the Royal West of England Academy with a visual memorial of some of the people killed by the army and right-wing paramilitaries in the BP-controlled area of Colombia.
