Over the next 36 hours, a very small minority of Bristolians, perhaps as few as three percent, will stagger out of their homes and head to a local building know as a church.

Situated on prime real estate, worth millions of pounds, these buildings are rarely used, and even then underused. Indeed, many only achieve a reasonable attendance once or twice a year. There are many prominent examples of such buildings around Bristol. One of their attractions on Sunday will be that they are one of the very few buildings open to the public in the morning. Other buildings, known as pubs, will open at 12 noon and are likely to attract a higher turn out of people worshipping. read full story / add a comment

Successive reports have confirmed the reality of the quite unprecedented threat the world faces from the destabilisation of the global climate. We are already seeing the first signs in a series of weather disasters, like Hurricane Katrina.

A march in London on Saturday 3rd December to protest against the refusal of world leaders to act decisively to prevent global warming has been organised.

Coaches are going from Bristol. Tickets are £9 (waged) and £6 (low/unwaged) and are available from La Ruca on the Gloucester Road and Circle Books in North Street.

A meeting to rally support for the demo – and to build a local campaign in Bristol – has been organised for Tuesday 22nd November at 7.30 pm at the Friends’ Meeting House, 300 Gloucester Road. All are welcome. read full story / add a comment

Forwarded for Karen Bell in Venezuela.

......................................................................

Hi amigos, sorry I have not been in contact before. I have been very busy and it has been a facinating, and sometimes confusing time. Venezuela is extremely beautiful, the most beautiful country I have ever been to I think. I am sending you some notes based on a three day visit to Barinas, the state that Chavez comes from. I went with two Australians and I was doing the translating while they wrote these notes. It gives you an idea of what I have been up to and what the situation is like. I later returned to stay with the same family in Barinas but that is another story...Look forward to seeing you all soon, back on the 21st September. I will be organising a meeting to help launch a Bristol Solidarity with Venezuela group sometime in early November. Hope those of you in Bristol will be able to come.

Lots of love, Karen read full story / add a comment

I got this from someone else and noticed it was not published here. The Home Office is deporting Somalis, Zimbabwean, Kosovans, Iraqis... when is clear that they will face persecution in their countries. this case illustrtaes that rather that doing that some prefer even to kill themselves. Stop terrorising refugees!
They are here because they were terrorised before by some of those regimes these hypocrites say to be fighting against!
For more info on dispersion of refugees, etc, see latest Bristle no 19 and Bristol Defend The Asylum Seekers Campaign
