North Somerset's recently been exposed for dumping thousands of its library books in recycling bins. It's also flogging off many more at bargain-basement prices. In fact I recently bought a pristine hardback copy of Noam Chomsky's "Failed States" - published less than 12 months ago - for just 30p from the council's public library in Portishead. A bargain for me, but a shame that others now won't be able to study Chomsky's incisive analysis on the USA as a failed state and Iran's nuclear ambitions. MR read full story / add a comment

Bristol North West Labour Constituency Party members have selected Sam Townend as their parliamentary candidate. He coyly tells the local press he’s “a lawyer from Hackney”. Leaving aside the fact that according to the Labour Party nobody in Bristol is up to the job of representing the city in Westminster, for some reason Sam is not being entirely honest about his background here. This ever so ‘umble lawyer from Hackney - perhaps earning a small crust from legal aid work for the downtrodden citizens of the UK’s poorest borough? - is no such fucking thing. He’s actually a - wait for it - Cambridge educated barrister, specialising in corporate law, living in the rather more charming and upmarket environs of Southwark! read full story / add a comment

I have been looking at the Bristol Local Election results and I think the real story is the slow, but sure march of the Greens as a political force in Bristol, and this is driven by the change in the culture of the city towards ecological and sustainable issues. read full story / add a comment

In April 2007, Labour candidate Busharat Ali published an image that 'proved' he was "on the National March in London against the Iraq war"... but it soon turned out that he had simply photoshopped himself into the picture (and rather clumsily at that) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsOUqIRGMoY read full story / add a comment

Back on 22 March Bristol City Council agreed a proposal by LibDem cabinet member John Kiely (Easton ward) to privatise the remaining in-house home care service (see http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26039 & http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26086) Since then the workers have been out and about protesting loudly about this attack on services for older & disabled vulnerable people in the community, and the attack on their jobs and conditions. This Friday, 20 April, at 2pm, they will march for a second time in Kiely’s Easton ward – meet 2pm on St Marks Rd, Easton, BS5. The event is backed by the TGWU. read full story / add a comment

A meeting of Somerset Tories has concluded that the current Labour Government will not complete its full-term. While the Tories have not changed their agenda at all (still racist, still anti-working class) and news reports of Cameron's plans to save the NHS are a smokescreen, the Labour Governement is seen as ripe for the taking. Tony Blair's standing-down as Prime Minister will be the signal for concerted media attacks on whoever replaces him, with influential dailies including the Rupert Murdoch owned newspapers leading the call for the Tories to be returned to power. 'We are confident of victory in the next General Election' said one source.' If Labour make it to 2009, we'll be surprised. Nu-Labour has moved so far to the right that Middle England will hardly notice the difference.' read full story / add a comment |
