There is now a full scale crisis over the occupation of Afghanistan. As the death toll mounts the military top brass have no coherent strategy and the politicians can give no sensible explanation as to why the troops are in Afghanistan. The idea that bombing and strafing Afghan towns and villages will reduce the threat of terrorism is simply untenable. And despite the intensive media spin, opinion polls continue to show majority opposition to the war in Britain, with 56% in The Guardian/BBC poll and 59% in the ITV poll. The emphasis on the number of helicopters available to the British forces is a smokescreen. As Seumas Milne says in the Guardian today 'British soldiers aren't dying in Afghanistan because they haven't got enough helicopters, but because they're an occupying force in another country where they're not wanted.' So few people now attend the Bristol Vigil that the question must be asked, is it time to call it a day? There are often only two or three people in attendance, if that, and this makes them particularly vulnerable to the predatory, or just the moody, “out for a bit of sport”. The two founder members of the Vigil, Lois who’s ninety and Neville, ninety-six, need not be so concerned in this regard, but just a couple of people on the vigil may well fall prey to the opportunist bullying fraternity. read full story / add a comment
