Is the expansion a white elephant? Best case scenario, take people off on holiday away from a region that makes its money from tourism and worse case be an unused patch of concrete where country side that could have attracted tourists once was. read full story / add a comment

Bristol City Council published their council tax budget recently, with 'only' an increase of 4.44% that apparently offers 'good value for money'. Certain long-suffering residents may disagree. One of the largest items of new expenditure is a whopping £820,000 a year for supporting 'off peak bus routes and park & ride'. The 'off-peak bus routes' in question include the mysterious buses that orbit the city going, it seems, nowhere in particular. These are mainly run by South Glos Bus and Coach, owned by the Durbin family in Patchway who have made millions out of their bus contracts over recent years. But there is one other problem with this: where are all the passengers? read full story / add a comment

Bristol City Council have included money in their budget to pay for an extra train on the Severn Beach line. The decision was taken by the Lib Dem Cabinet, with support from the other parties, in response to a campaign by Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways. It is expected that trains will run more frequently (every 30-40 minutes) from Bristol Temple Meads to Avonmouth, for a trial period from December 2007 until March 2010. The investment was finally agreed at the Council Budget meeting last night. read full story / add a comment

Students and staff of the University of the West of England occupied the Frenchay Campus roundabout for the afternoon on Friday to raise awareness about the need to tackle Bristol’s car dependent transport system and its high carbon dioxide emissions. Protesters gathered on the roundabout despite rain and police presence of about a dozen officers. A Zebra aided students across the busy roundabout, and called for more crossings. Tea and sandwiches were shared, and spirits kept high as passersby smiled and drivers on the roundabout hooted their support. Signs that were planted on the roundabout and held by protesters included “Sea Levels Rising No Solo Driving”, “End Parking Subsidies”, and “Unfare Wasteful Emissions”. Mainstream press coverage included live segments on BBC Points West and BBC Radio Bristol, as well as Star Radio and the Evening Post. read full story / add a comment

The UWE Transport Action Network, a new grassroots coalition of UWE students, faculty, and staff will hold a demonstration on Friday 23rd Feb. at 1pm at the main Frenchay Campus bus stop, marching to the UWE roundabout to protest the lack of affordable, reliable bus service, lack of adequate cycling and pedestrian facilities, massive university parking subsidies, and the high carbon emissions that result. A Critical Mass Cycle ride will leave the UWE Frenchay roundabout at 5:30pm and merge with the regular monthly Bristol Critical Mass ride, leaving from Arnolfini at 6:30pm. An official advisor says plans for new bus routes will not solve Bristol's growing traffic chaos. Andrew Hardwick, president of the Bristol Property Agents Association, told the press that the £42 million grant awarded to the four former Avon councils for 10 new routes would be better spent on other projects. read full story / add a comment
