The No 10 Downing Street web site is running a petition for the return of an appropriate and reliable train service to the Bristil and Wessex area. If you believe in local public transport inclusing rail, please sign up. Each petition signatory is promised an email explaining the government's response once the petition is closed. read full story / add a comment

Further to the FOSBR campaign for more regular trains on the Severn Beach line, amongst others. A report in today's Evening Post on a First commuters meet last night in Bath (which was fairly supportive, shock!), indicates First commuters are planning to not pay their fares next Monday. Instead the more organised one's will offer ticket collectors mocked-up tickets stating 'Cattle class'. This reflects the overcrowded and unreliable service offered by First for many travelling by train into Bristol. read full story / add a comment

Last night, campaigners lobbied Bristol City Council Cabinet, asking them to cut congestion by investing in the local rail network. Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (FOSBR) say that the Council should invest in an extra train on the Severn Beach line in their 2007/8 budget. They say more frequent trains (30-40 minutes rather than hourly or less) would get people out of their cars and on to trains. FOSBR were supported by the RMT, the Conservative Candidate for Bristol North West Charlotte Leslie, Green party councillor Charlie Bolton, Labour leader Helen Holland and Respect. ASLEF (the train drivers' union) also backs the campaign. read full story / add a comment

First Great Western have been blamed for overcrowded trains across the South West. According to the National Union of Rail and Maritime Transport Workers (RMT), the problem of overcrowding would be solved if First released 'mothballed' trains, currently held in railway sidings.

Overcrowding has been a big problem on the Severn Beach line, where First have been using smaller trains than usual. Passengers have been abandoned on the platform, unable to board the packed trains.

However, Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (FOSBR) argue that overcrowding on the Severn Beach line is nothing new, because trains are so infrequent. read full story / add a comment

Our Campaign:

1) We aim to make driving/owning a 4x4 in Central Bristol socially unacceptable and very , very uncool.

2) We aim to force the Bristol City Council to introduce a Congestion Charge ASAP that penalises high emission private vehicles
(and that includes sports cars).

3) We will use Direct Action to achieve our campaign aims. read full story / add a comment

What

Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road.

One Idea is to have comparatively short (30-40 minute ) rides Bristol, hopefully this will allow us to make our point and communicate effectively with other road users.

When

6:30pm on the last Friday of every month. Starting on January the 26th.

Where

Starting outside the Arnolfini, ending up at the Hatchet. read full story / add a comment

somerset / transport / press release Friday November 10, 2006 00:22 by Stop Bristol Airport Expansion
The Stop Bristol Airport Expansion campaign (SBAE) believe that Bristol International Airport’s (BIA) Master Plan, launched today, could influence planning decisions, despite being a business plan and not a planning document. We will be closely scrutinising the plan in the light of the Stern Report published last week and last Saturday’s Climate Chaos rally. The Stern Report has emphasised the chaos and economic disaster that will follow if climate change is left unchecked, and acknowledges that aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions. The report should be a wake-up call for the Government and Local Authorities that the planned expansion of airports such as Bristol will damage the economy rather than enhance it. read full story / add a comment
