We knew that putting the plans for BRT down the railway path "on the shelf" meant they could be picked up in the future -we just weren't expecting it to be so soon. At Tuesday night's Bristol City Council meeting, the green and lib dem amended motion to keep BRT off the path got watered down enough to leave BRT-on-path as an option. read full story / add a comment

Business West commissioned researchers at UWE to compare two economic reports on the consequences of expanding BIA. One had been prepared by Roger Tym and Partners (Tym) for BIA and the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), while the other had been prepared by Professor John Whitelegg of Eco-Logica for the Parish Councils Airport Association. read full story / add a comment

Given the news that the council has apparently halted plans to run Bus Rapid Transit down the Bristol-Bath Railway Path, you might think we can declare that we have won and that our work is done. This not yet the case. We want as many people as possible to come out Sunday March 30, to show they like the path left alone.

If you didn't know, there were plans drawn up to use cycle lanes around Bristol to run buses in too. While plenty of people would agree that buses are a step in the right direction - using cycling paths to site them is a bad idea. Nuts in fact. So a broad campaign against this idea has developed... read full story / add a comment

We are a critical mass!

On Friday August 27, 2004 just days before the start of the Republican National Convention, a massive police operation was underway. By the end of the night 264 people were arrested. It marked one of the largest mass arrests in New York City's history - and the arrested had done nothing illegal.

For many New Yorkers, August was the first time they heard of what has become a monthly ritual for New York City's bike community; a free-forming ride called Critical Mass.

Still We Ride is a documentary that captures the joyous atmosphere of this August ride before the arrests began and the chaos that followed. It recounts how this ride first started in San Francisco over 10 years ago and chronicles the police crackdown and resulting court battles in New York over the last twelve months. The movie takes on issues of civil liberties, surveillance, the power of mainstream media, and the benefits of alternative means of transportation.

Following the community meeting last night in Bath, commuter group More Train Less Strain + other ne'erdowells will be holding a rail fare strike on Monday 28th January morning, handing out rail fare strike tickets and cattle masks at entrances to train stations, so you too can be part of the Monday morning commuter cattle truck. First Great Western are the UK's most profitable and least reliable rail service provider, who've just announced a 10% fare hike. It's rumoured that FGW will have their staff relaxed from hassling folks about fares on the day, and Yate, Yatton, Frome and Oxford groups will also take part. Not sure about Bristol commuters, yet. read full story / add a comment

Have your say at a public meeting at the Grove Street Church Hall, Grove Street, Bath, Tuesday 15th January, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. We want you to tell us how we, the travelling public should respond to the worsening service and increase in fares. Has the time come for action? Other towns and cities such as Frome and Oxford have expressed interest in joing together with Bath and Bristol to take part in a fare strike. You, the public will decide! read full story / add a comment

What is Chooseday?

We are all becoming aware of climate change, but how can we do anything about it? It all seems too big and complex. Something needs to shift.

How would it be if Tuesdays became a focus across the Bristol region for us all to re-imagine our lifestyles - a day on which we choose to live differently.

This is Chooseday — why don't you join in? read full story / add a comment
