Nick Rosen Book How To Live Off Grid
bristol / the environment / event notice Friday September 18, 2009 15:11 by madboy23   image 1 image
Nick has written extensively on the notion of living off grid, that is how to disconnect yourself from energy and utility companies in order to make yourself self-sufficient and sustainable. Why would you want to do that you may ask? Well as climate change and energy resources such as oil continue to decline, the cost and availability of cheap energy will also decline. Currently our energy needs are being fulfilled by others, such as gas from Russia and Oil from all over the world putting the UK in a very precarious position in terms of energy. This means that new energy solutions will have to be found for the population of the UK. read full story / add a comment

After 19 days, the occupation of the Vestas wind turbine factory in Newport on the Isle of Wight ended yesterday. (See report below for witnessed account of this). As the workers left the factory they said their struggle for jobs and environment will go on and urged us to ‘…fight on!’. Many supporters will stay to picket the factory to stop equipment being removed. Others will go to support the rooftop occupation in Vestas at Cowes. The Vestas workers have been heroic and now we all need to be heroic and make sure this really is ‘…just the beginning!’. The campaigning carries on. It is up to us what happens next. read full story / add a comment

This morning the court granted Vestas PLC the possession order it sought for the factory where workers are currently in occupation fighting to save their jobs, and save the environment. There were suggestions about half an hour ago that bailiffs were already inside the building, which now seem to have been an attempt to demoralise the occupiers. However, this court decision means that the eviction is now imminent but the occupiers are not planning to give up. They now need all the support they can get. read full story / add a comment

Speaker: Sheila Coleman, David Goldblatt & Daniel Bennett

This April is the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough football disaster which killed 96 Liverpool fans and injured hundreds more. Twenty years on, few people know what actually happened and the (now admitted) lies told by the Police to the press at the time remain as many people's memory of events. The coroner and the inquiry narrowly restricted their investigations. Numerous judges have thwarted attempts by the survivors, families and campaign groups to have the events investigated. Injunctions prevent people from speaking about certain aspects of

Been at recent demonstrations with police present then the likelihood is that you are on the CrimInt database. The government is further eroding our civil liberties by producing databases that include footage of people at demonstrations and they are retaining this information in order to build up a picture of all the events you have been at, even if you have not been involved in any illegal activities you are still on this database. Also this week the Information Commissioner has revealed that building companies were vetting employees through information covertly gathered from a private detective on trade union activiites and conduct at work. read full story / add a comment
