Yesterday, 14 April, saw day 1 of Elija (James) Smith's 2-day trial at Yate court. He faces a charge of aggravated trespass under section 68 of the 1994 Criminal Justice Act. The charges relate to 2 actions at Raytheon's office up in Frenchay, on the 23/24 October, and 5 November. James is the only defendant, charges against all other Raytheon campaigners appear to have bee dropped. read full story / add a comment

After boiling over in December, the social war in Greece continues to simmer along with daily protests, strikes, occupations and other actions. Having been beaten off the streets in December, the Greek police returned in January with new stocks of more unpleasant tear gas (from either Germany or Israel), and a policy of teargassing and beating even the most non-violent protesters. But still protests continue… read full story / add a comment

It appears British Gas is being sucked into the Israeli state’s war on Gaza and murder of innocent civilians. British Gas and a business partner signed a 25 year gas & oil exploration deal with the Palestinian Authority in 1999, for an area off the coast of Gaza. After drilling 2 wells in 2000, named Gaza marine 1 and 2, British Gas announced the discovery of at least $4billion worth of gas reserves. Ever since, Israel has been conspiring to get its hands on the gas and the ensuing profits. read full story / add a comment
crisis of capital deepens
bristol / protests / news report Friday January 02, 2009 21:45 by solidarity info   image 1 image
As Bristolians emerge from the fog of the festive season to be faced with a bleak new year, over in Greece the rebellion against police brutality and their own similar economic crisis has entered a new, currently quieter, more thoughtful phase – although the level of struggle remains at an intensity unknown in the UK in recent years. Occupations, protests, strikes, pickets, and irregular attacks on the state apparatus continue – see the links below. Not unsurprisingly, protests outside the Israeli embassy in Athens have been huge, as the Greek resistance understands well the importance of international solidarity. At the same time solidarity actions for those arrested have increased, as have actions supporting & defending migrants and refugees – see for example http://clandestinenglish.wordpress.com/2008/12/28/when-...f-us/ read full story / add a comment

The authorities across Bristol and the UK are no doubt relieved that school & university students are now on their winter break. As they survey the increasing opposition worldwide to the growing recession and crisis of capital, they will have remembered the opposition that broke out at the start of the Iraq war. In Bristol we remember still the example of school & university students autonomously taking to the streets of Bristol to demonstrate their anger at that stupid, barbaric war. Such action is needed again. read full story / add a comment

More bad news for Bristol’s workers as its announced around 11 local Woolworths stores will close, probably by xmas, chucking over 500 workers onto the dole. No Government bailout for them eh? Whats up, is the state running out of cash after bailing out all its mates in the banking & finance sectors? Worse will come for workers if the LloydsTSB/HBOS merger is allowed, with 100’s of high street branches closing and the loss of up to 20,000 jobs. There may well be some empty shiny office space coming up in downtown Bristol and around Temple Meads, and some vacancies on the high streets. Empty space invasion anyone? read full story / add a comment

Disappointing to see that the sudden rush of 3 newswire posts, relating to the working class & struggle, fail to mention potentially one of the biggest ongoing series of strikes in Bristol and the rest of the country for many a year.

Wednesday & Thursday sees 2 days of strike action by many of the lowest paid workers in the public sector. Nationally upto 600,000 members of the Unison & Unite unions could take action in what may be the first of a series of rolling strikes. Next time around it may be 3 days, then 4, then…?

Back on 22 March Bristol City Council agreed a proposal by LibDem cabinet member John Kiely (Easton ward) to privatise the remaining in-house home care service (see http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26039 & http://bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=26086)

Since then the workers have been out and about protesting loudly about this attack on services for older & disabled vulnerable people in the community, and the attack on their jobs and conditions. This Friday, 20 April, at 2pm, they will march for a second time in Kiely’s Easton ward – meet 2pm on St Marks Rd, Easton, BS5. The event is backed by the TGWU. read full story / add a comment
